FAQs

For immediate answers to common questions, please refer to our FAQ section below. It addresses various topics related to our residential care services, including admission procedures and the types of care we provide.
We offer residential care and have support of local nurses. We are registered to support people 18 and over including 65+, Dementia Care; Mental Health; Physical Disability; Sensory needs; and Learning Disability if this is a secondary condition. We also provide respite care for people in need of a holiday by the sea.
All our staff are trained to the national minimum standards required by the local regulatory bodies. Over and above these, staff are encouraged to undertake personal development and attend additional training courses. Specialist training courses are also provided to staff to ensure that they are fully trained to undertake more complex care needs.
The admission process involves us visiting you and your family so that we can create a person-centred bespoke care plan which is created for you to include all your needs and preferences, this will begin by one of the management team coming to visit you to complete an assessment, the process may also include information provided by your social working team if you have one.
Each room is furnished with an electric profile bed, lockable bed side cabinet and chest of drawers, each room has a built-in wardrobe, bedside chair and a television, we are happy for residents to bring their own furniture providing it fits into the bedroom and does not present any dangers or safety issues. We are happy for residents to bring their own bedding if this makes them feel more comfortable, but bedding is provided and regularly laundered. Curtains and towels are also provided.
Wi-Fi is available throughout the home at no additional cost to the residents, devices are available for resident use and staff are happy to support residents to access the internet or contact friends and family via Skype, Teams etc.
The care costs will vary dependant on the level of care needed and the room chosen, starting fees are ÂŁ1400 per week. There will be an annual increase in fees in line with the cost of living.

Fees will cover accommodation/hospitality costs and care, however additional services will be extra, for example, hairdressing, massage therapy, chiropody services.
We continually review our residents needs and the support we offer and we are all of the opinion that this is the residents home, however unfortunately there may sometimes be occasions whereby the level of care needed is greater than we can offer in a residential setting.

In these circumstances we will support you and your family through the process.

There are two types of care homes; Residential and Nursing homes, both offer 24-hour support, however nursing homes have registered nurses on site 24 hours a day meaning that nursing homes are typically utilised by residents that may require regular medical attention that the district nurses are unable to provide.
At Island Sands we do not have set visiting hours and do not have a protected mealtime policy, for a minimal fee we are happy for families to enjoy a meal with their loved one, we ask for this to be booked in advance so we can cater for all and provide a comfortable area for you to enjoy time together.
At Island Sands we recognise that there may be several reasons why a short-term stay may be ideal, for example if a person is being cared for by family members or friends then this option allows those caregivers to take some time for themselves.

Respite care may be needed following a time in hospital after a fall or illness to allow people to have a little more recovery time before going home. Some people may be considering moving into care and wish to have some respite time in a care home to decide their options without committing to a long-term stay.
Island Sands is staffed 24 hours a day and have waking night staff.
There is a nurse call bell system in place whereby residents can ring for support and assistance.
There is an on call system in operation 24/7 so staff can access support and help if needed during out of hours.
There is not a safe in your room , however a lockable drawer/cabinet will be provided for any personal valuables you may have.
If you live within the same catchment area as the home you may be able to keep your own GP, however if the home is out of your GPs catchment area we will support you to find an alternative GP.

At Island Sands we have a nominated medical centre in place, which provides medical advice and support and a GP who visits the home once a week.
Activities are discussed at our monthly residents meeting to ensure all wishes are catered for, we have regular visits from local performers as well as fun inclusive exercise groups, all residents are encouraged to go out on trips from shopping to places of interest. In house activities include, arts and crafts, bingo, puzzles and board games, quizzes, book club, baking, gardening and our famous theme days where residents have the choice to dress up and take part in the range of themed activities. Residents are also supported to attend religious services if this is their wish and important to their spiritual well-being.
Residents are free to come and go as they please, unless there are any restrictions to their care and support needs. All we ask is that you let us know you are going out and if possible, your planned destination and what time you expect to return to Island Sands.
Smoking can be dangerous, as a match, lighter or cigarette could lead to a fire in the House. Those residents who wish to smoke may do so in our designated smoking area. Residents may not smoke in their rooms due to the smoking laws July 2007 this includes vaping.
Although we have a no pet policy at Island Sands, we are happy for visitors to bring pets to visit their loved ones if they are on a lead and under control. At Island Sands we have a regular Pet therapy visit where a therapy pet is brought to the home to spend time with the residents.
We are committed to ensuring that your experience with Island Sands Residential Home is as informative and reassuring as possible.
